Sea Surface Temperature
Sea Surface Temperature (SST), or Ocean Surface Temperature, is the water temperature close to the ocean's surface. The exact meaning of surface varies according to the measurement method used, but it is between 1 millimetre (0.04 in) and 20 metres (70 ft) below the sea surface.
Climate Reanalyser
The Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine provides a Climate Reanalyser that displays current (1 or 2 day lag) data on sea surface temperature.
The linked page provides time series and map visualizations of daily mean Sea Surface Temperature (SST) from NOAA Optimum Interpolation SST (OISST) version 2.1. OISST is a 0.25°x0.25° gridded dataset that provides estimates of temperature based on a blend of satellite, ship, and buoy observations.
Over a year of record temperatures
In late June 2024 there had been a period of over a year when each day set a new ocean temperature record.
